One of the most rewarding aspects of my professional journey is the opportunity to engage with students and share practical lessons that are often not taught in classrooms.

On 5 May 2025, I was invited by the School of General Studies, Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) to serve as a speaker for the Workplace Professional Skills Module Talk. The session was part of APU's effort to expose students to real industry expectations and prepare them for the transition from university to the working world.

Having spent more than two decades in the construction industry, working with contractors, consultants, and developers, I felt privileged to share some of the lessons I have learned throughout my career journey.

Beyond Academic Results

One of the key messages I delivered during the session was that academic qualifications alone are no longer sufficient in today's employment market.

Historically, employers focused heavily on academic credentials. However, hiring trends have evolved over time. Today, organizations increasingly look for candidates who possess a combination of technical knowledge, practical skills, and professional attributes that enable them to contribute effectively from the start.

While obtaining good academic results remains important, students must also develop:

  • Communication skills

  • Leadership capabilities

  • Problem-solving abilities

  • Teamwork and collaboration

  • Technical proficiency

  • Professional networking skills

  • Continuous learning habits

I encouraged students to actively participate in seminars, webinars, conferences, student activities, and industry-related programmes while still pursuing their studies. These experiences often become valuable differentiators during job interviews.

Understanding Modern Hiring Trends

The discussion also touched on the changing expectations of employers.

Based on industry observations and research findings presented during the session, organizations are increasingly seeking employees who demonstrate adaptability, specialized skills, and a willingness to continuously learn. We discussed:

  • The growing importance of skills-based hiring

  • The impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on future careers

  • Professional certifications and lifelong learning

  • The importance of specialized competencies

  • Building a strong professional profile beyond academic qualifications

One of the central messages was simple:

A degree may open the door, but skills and competence determine how far you progress in your career.

Preparing for Interviews and Employment

Another important topic covered was the recruitment and interview process. Drawing from my experience as both an interviewer and industry practitioner, I shared practical advice on:

  • Job searching strategies

  • Preparing for interviews

  • Common interview questions

  • Professional communication

  • Salary discussions

  • Following up after interviews

  • Reporting for duty professionally

Many students spend years preparing academically but receive very little guidance on how to present themselves effectively during interviews. The session provided practical insights into what employers typically look for during candidate evaluations.

Sustainability in Career Development

Perhaps the most important message of the session was that learning does not stop after graduation. Professional growth requires continuous effort through:

  • Continuous Professional Development (CPD)

  • Professional certifications

  • Industry involvement

  • Networking activities

  • Micro-credential programmes

  • Participation in professional associations

The discussion referenced the principles of competence outlined in ISO 9004, where competence is built through a combination of education, skills, and experience. I encouraged students to view their careers as long-term journeys rather than simply focusing on obtaining their first job.

Reflections

Looking back, the session was particularly meaningful because it allowed me to contribute to the development of future professionals before they officially enter the workforce. Throughout my career, I have benefited greatly from mentors, colleagues, and industry leaders who were willing to share their experiences with me. Therefore, I believe it is important for experienced practitioners to give back by helping the next generation better understand what lies ahead.

The students were highly engaged throughout the session, asking thoughtful questions on career development, employability skills, and workplace expectations. It was encouraging to see their enthusiasm and willingness to learn.

Success in today's workplace is not determined solely by what you know, but by your ability to continuously learn, adapt, and apply that knowledge effectively throughout your career.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the School of General Studies, Asia Pacific University (APU), for the invitation and the opportunity to share my experiences with their students.
