Training Diary 2023: Expanding the Reach of Construction Quality Management
The year 2023 was another active and rewarding year in my journey as a trainer and facilitator in Construction Quality Management Systems (QMS). While online learning had initially emerged as a necessity during the pandemic, it continued to prove its effectiveness as a platform for knowledge sharing among construction professionals across Malaysia.
Throughout the year, I conducted a total of 12 Quality Management System (QMS) training sessions, primarily in collaboration with ICM Training & Consultant and Hasara Consultant. These programmes attracted more than 118 recorded participants, comprising engineers, inspectors, site personnel, supervisors, QA/QC practitioners, consultants, and project management personnel from various sectors of the construction industry.
As in previous years, the course content continued to evolve through periodic updates to training materials, incorporating participant feedback, lessons learned from ongoing projects, and developments in quality management practices. This continuous improvement approach ensures that the programme remains practical, relevant, and aligned with current industry needs.
Supporting the Development of Construction Quality Practitioners
One of the highlights of 2023 was the opportunity to conduct a specialized webinar for the Construction Inspector-of-Work Association Malaysia (COWAM). On 15 July 2023, COWAM organized a webinar entitled Quality Management System (QMS) for Construction Personnel. The webinar formed part of COWAM's annual training and professional development programme for its members. Unlike the standard QMS course, this session was specifically tailored for construction personnel, with particular emphasis on the role of the Inspector-of-Works (IOW) in ensuring quality compliance throughout the construction process.
The training materials were carefully reviewed and adapted to suit the target audience, focusing on practical quality management requirements encountered by inspectors and site personnel. Key topics included:
Fundamental principles of Quality Management Systems
Quality control processes within construction projects
Documentation and record management requirements
Responsibilities of construction personnel in quality assurance
Practical implementation of quality systems on site
Best practices for achieving project quality objectives
The webinar was conducted in Bahasa Malaysia and attracted approximately 100 participants from across Malaysia, reflecting the growing interest in quality management among construction professionals. The ability to reach participants from multiple regions simultaneously once again demonstrated the effectiveness of online learning platforms in supporting industry-wide professional development.
Continuous Improvement Through Knowledge Sharing
One of the most encouraging aspects of conducting these programmes is the opportunity to interact with professionals from diverse backgrounds and organisations. The discussions, questions, and experiences shared by participants often provide valuable insight into the challenges faced by construction practitioners in implementing quality management systems effectively. These interactions not only benefit the participants but also contribute to my own continuous learning as both a practitioner and trainer.
Looking Back
The year 2023 reinforced the importance of maintaining consistency in professional development and knowledge sharing. While there were no major changes to the overall programme structure, the continued support from training organisers, professional associations, and participants demonstrated the industry's growing recognition of quality management as an essential element of project success.
